Crowns are supposed to last for a long time, however they’re not something that will last forever. Hot and cold drinks, along with pressure, can sometimes cause these to slip off, typically due to age, or if you do something with it, such as open something, or be involved in a sort of accident. This can be quite painful, but there are different ways to actually restore these, and we’ll go over how to repair a broken crown. These are options you can speak with your dentist about.
Not only does it look ugly if you have a broken crown, it can actually cause bacteria to show up. If you don’t have it there, you can subject the area to infection and the like. If you do end up having a crown that gets lost, the best thing for you to do is to call your dentist and get the treatment that you want to get from this.
Now, you have a few options in terms of treatment that you can get for this, and we’ll go over each of them below:
The first, is a new crown period. If you have a crown that’s popped off, sometimes you can pop it back into place, but if the crown is very old, you might need a replacement. It’s essentially the same thing that you had before, and it’s not too invasive, and this blends in, so it definitely does help with preventing it from being obvious that you have a crown. They’re pretty hard to see as well except on x-rays and dental treatments.
Then there is a partial crown. These are called dental onlays, and typically, this is used in the instance where you’ve got a tooth that doesn’t require a crown in full, but it needs more than just a filling. This is typically a composite onlay that creates a natural look to the tooth. It eliminates needing a crown, but also will strengthen the tooth while it’s done, so it’s a good option if you don’t want a new crown period.
Then there is dental bonding. If the tooth is jagged and not shaped right the tooth might have caused the crown to pop off, and in this case, you might need a dental bonding to cover the bumpy surface. Typically, this is a resin in the shape of a tooth, where it’s put over and over to help put the structure of the tooth together so that it’s the same color as the teeth. It’s then bonded to the tooth and then cured and hardened and then it’s sculpted and looks completely natural. This is usually an option if you’re looking for something cheaper than other options, and you don’t have too many issues.
Now, the last one is typically a last resort one, but this happens when you have a crown that comes off, and the tooth is then exposed, but then, the tooth is found to be so compromised that the dentist might pull it completely, so you’ll get an extraction. From there, you’ll be given either the option for a bridge or a denture, but typically people want a dental implant. This is a secure solution that actually will keep the jaw together and stimulated, rather than leaving just a full hole where the tooth was, and it prevents bone loss from happening further. The implant is an anchor in a sense for the prosthetic crown that’s put on top, and it does give you a much more natural smile. It does give you security, and they’re super strong, so they’re a good option.
Regardless, if you have a crown, that’s broken off you need to fix it. you need to take care of it before it gets worse, and while it might be super painful and a trauma at that moment, once it’s repaired, it will in turn improve the smile about ten times more than before. It’s important to get the restorative treatments that you need, with a crown being one of the main types of treatments that you can use to help make your body and teeth stronger and healthier as a result too.
